THEATRO MUNICIPAL DE SÃO PAULO Quarteto de Cordas Da Cidade De São Paulo

The São Paulo Municipal Theatre String Quartet is one of the oldest permanent ensembles of Theatro Municipal de São Paulo. Initially named the Haydn Quartet, it was founded by Mário de Andrade, alongside the creation of the city’s Cultural Department in 1935. Since its inception, the Quartet has been dedicated to the promotion of chamber music, both from Brazil and around the world, and to showcasing Brazilian performance.
Over time, the ensemble has gone through various evolutions, including periods of institutional instability and changes to its members. In 1981, it became known as the São Paulo city string quartet. Now recognised as one of Brazil’s most prestigious ensembles, it performs a rich repertoire, with regular concerts in the conservatory room at the Theatro Municipal, as well as many performances in various cities within Brazil and internationally.
