SANKYOKU : BETWEEN IKUTA AND YAMADA TRADITIONS
WORLD MUSIC • JAPAN
AN EXCEPTIONAL EXPERIENCE, BOTH IN JAPAN AND FRANCE.
After their much celebrated concert in 2023, this Japanese group returns to the Théâtre de la Ville with an expanded ensemble. Bringing together strings - koto and sangen - with the shakuhachi flute and vocals, these seven musicians, perform Sankyoku classics from the Edo era (1603–1868). Rarely heard in Europe, this repertoire truly comes in to its own through their unique pairing of Ikuta and Yamada, two schools with differing but complementary styles, creating a subtle yet, deeply expressive performance.
