THE OTHER PLACE, AFTER ANTIGONE Alexander Zeldin
FRENCH PREMIERE • UNITED KINGDOM
WHEN GREEK TRAGEDY STRIKES A MODERN DAY FAMILY.
Two sisters, Annie and Issy, reunite on the anniversary of their father’s death. His ashes have been kept in an urn for several years and now Chris, the sisters’ uncle, wants to spread them in a park and help the family move on to a new future. Annie Refuses. Behind this apparently modern conflict lies a much older one, that of Antigone. Here, writer and director Alexander Zeldin revives the themes of Sophocles’ tragedy with a pinch of humour. Zeldin takes an almost clinical approach, providing a merciless and incisive analysis of this dysfunctional family. With this piece, which debuted at London’s National Theatre, he reveals a new, and exceptionally intense facet of his work.
