RESIST, EVEN IN SILENCE: A DIZZYING PLUNGE INTO THE RUINS OF THE 20TH CENTURY.
« Every hour, every day, we had to fight for the right to be men… » this phrase cuts to the heart of Life and Fate. Completed in 1959, Vasily Grossman’s novel incisively explores the workings of the Soviet regime, its origins, excesses and violence, and even its similarities to nazism. Through this epic novel, we see the crumbling of an entire century, evidenced by the deportation and extermination of European Jews. To this day, this incredibly dense work remains powerfully and disturbingly relevant. On stage, the actors explore its message about servitude: reading pages aloud, questioning and discussing them. Why do we submit? How does fear seep in and create fractures in our most intimate lives? Bringing to life both past and present, this performance creates a space for mindful reflection on that which still resists within us.
