Amidst the turmoil of the world, certain stories remind us of what is most human in us. The Caucasian Chalk Circle tells the story of Grusha, a young woman who, fleeing war, rescues a child abandoned by the nobility. She raises him with courage and affection, until the day his biological mother demands his return. Who, then, deserves to be called mother? Emmanuel Demarcy-Mota takes on Bertolt Brecht's play with the Troupe du Théâtre de la Ville and breathes new life into it. He turns it into a free, poetic theatre rooted in the present. Carried by committed actors, the production combines seriousness and humour to question justice, solidarity and responsibility. In a world marked by exile and inequality, this work resonates as an ode to kindness and transmission, reminding us that to protect is already to resist.
