FOR SALIA SANOU, BACH CAN BELONG TO AFRICA, TO PART OF A FAMILIAR AND UNIVERSAL MEMORY, BRINGING CONTINENTS TOGETHER.
Bach appeared as an obvious choice as his music resonated with the kora and balafon which were the sounds of Salia Sanou’s childhood. Such recollections no doubt linked the music to women, which would explain the choice of six virtuoso female dancers from different dance backgrounds: contemporary, jazz, African, hip-hop, and classical ballet.
Each one is urged to express her originality, both artistic and personal, in a bid to find the connection with a universal dimension. The ultimate excitement is found in the combination of Salia Sanou dancing and a Bach Suite, performing across the interlacing of baroque counterpoint, in the vast scope for experimentation provided by a fugue. Performer and audience enjoy a moment suspended in time, giving rise to contemplation of the state of the world and reflection on our individual human nature.
