THE CHARMING POETRY OF THE TRAGIC STORY OF A DOOMED WARRIOR, TOLD IN ATMOSPHERIC TABLEAUS.
There is no one like Gaëlle Bourges for fresh and often surprising takes on the great works of art history. This time she takes us back to the 15th century, starting with a wedding chest that caught her eye at the museum of fine arts in Tours. This beautiful object illustrates the story of Camilla, a female warrior whose story is told in Vigil’s Aeneid and then by Boccaccio in the 14th century. The poet takes her death in battle as a pretext to admonish women not to go looking for a fight. But Bourges takes no such moralising tone, instead interpreting Camilla’s story as a metaphor for feminist struggles throughout the ages. Stunning poets of movement, the eight puppeteer performers take us on a journey through time and history, with both a sense of humour and a sense for the dramatic.
