A JOYFUL AND NOSTALGIC EPIC ABOUT THE HISTORY OF VIETNAM AND THE VIETNAMESE COMMUNITY EXILED IN FRANCE.
Staged as a vast panorama, this performance takes us to a Vietnamese restaurant, located in Saigon in 1956, but also in Paris in 1996. By bringing together two eras in an almost identical space, Caroline Guiela Nguyen creates a nuanced, lively, moving saga, made up of meticulous details gathered from close observation of Vietnam and Paris’ 13th arrondissement. The protagonists span several generations. They include a Parisian of Vietnamese descent, a war traumatised soldier, his fiancee, and young members of current-day Vietnamese society. They show us not only the hardships of colonisation and war, but also the close relationship forged over time between two cultures. Blending personal stories with historical events, this work paints a richly detailed and poignantly truthful human landscape.
