FROM KOSOVO TO SOUTH AFRICA, THIS INVESTIGATIVE WORK LOOKS AT THE FRAGILE PATH TO FORGIVENESS.

What does forgiveness mean in the wake of violence? How can a society rebuild after decades of conflict? ‘Under the shade of a tree, I sat and wept’ draws on two major historical experiments: the campaign to resolve blood feuds in Kosovo in 1990 and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission set up in post-apartheid South Africa. Through first-hand accounts and archives, a group of actors from Kosovo, Albania and South Africa explore questions of memory, justice and the limits of forgiveness. The performance reawakens long silent voices and questions the way we speak about history. A powerful work investigating the role of theatre in confronting the wounds of the past.
