A Transfigured Night
“Verklärte Nacht” is a Schönberg string sextet from the end of the Romantic period. Schönberg was inspired by a Richard Dehmel poem about a woman confessing to her lover that she is carrying the child of another man. The poem’s tragic tone echoes in the string persistent sound, sometimes charged with heavy passion, sometimes as subtle as a shy voice apparently empathizing with the protagonist’s ordeal.
